Dear David,
Greetings from Kitwe, Zambia.
We are very delighted to hear that you will be coming through to Zambia in September. It has been long since you came to Zambia and you have only seen the progress. We have furnished the houses with household items and the houses are ready for occupation. The inspection by Juvinile inspectors for the second time to check comformity with their rules is due this week. We technically ready to open the houses anytime the Local Authority says go ahead.

Attached is the picture showing ready bunk beds.

I will be in touch soon.

Kind regards, Mulenga Christopher

Dear Mr. Jamieson,
Thank you very much for your questions. In fact it has just come at the right time. Power was connected last week on Wednesday to our two houses and right now I am drafting a comprehensive report on the progress of the buildings. Due to our desparation, two boys are already in one of the houses on temporary terms.  We are trying our level best to look for household equipment and materials to furnish the houses before the children move in. By next week, I will come back to you with a report on the progress of the aforementioned activity.  We are consulting the street children with the help of street workers to identify the actual pioneers of the houses. By next week we will be thru with this interview. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Christopher Mulenga

Christopher Mulenga writes: 'We have made progress with electricity. I went to see the Permanent Secretary and complained about the delay of ZESCO to connect electricity to our centre despite making a payment in July, 2006. I further called the division manager and asked Fr. Peter to speak to him and further complain. Two days later they moved to the site and started the works. They have supplied the poles and what has remained is for them to install the transformer and connect power. By 15th January, power will reach our centre.'

Dated 2 Jan 2007.

'God bless you all and continue supporting our efforts. We are committed to support the street children of Zambia and see the end of the problem in the near future. We managed to renitegrate 76 children the whole of 2006. However 12 came back to the street and 64 have stayed in homes. This was not possible looking at the high poverty coupled with the ravaging HIV/AIDS pandemic in our sub-Sahara Africa. There are indicators that the issue of children coming to the street will worsen if the high levels of poverty in Zambia are not checked. Current statistics show that 83% of the population of Zambia live below poverty datum line. With these statistics, there are only 8% of GDP is targeted at addressing social sector of which 3% is targeted at levels of education sector. Zambian national budget has 54% donor funded. The NGOs in Zambia, ours inclusive, are all donor dependant. See how significant you are to our work. '

Christopher Mulenga reports that the walls are up to roof level on the second of Romilly's buildings there.

‘I would like to report to you that the first phase of the second block at our Kawama Building project has been successfully completed. I would also like to report that a lot of challenges in terms of management of the project were experienced. These challenges gave us an opportunity to have what it takes to do the project. It is like crossing a torrential river or swimming across the rapids. A lot of experiences have been gathered and as a result we can sail through in future constructions.'

3rd September 2006

Christopher Mulenga writes to say that tremendous progress with has been made to the first phase of the second Romilly Dormitory at Kitwe.
